Description

The painting (oil on cardboard) presents a freely composed, dreamlike world set against a luminous blue background. Organic, biomorphic forms, mask-like faces, birds, fish, and plant-like motifs float freely across the pictorial space without any spatial anchoring. Several vase- or amphora-like objects are decorated with ornamental and calligraphic signs. The loose brushwork, translucent layers of paint, and the combination of abstract and representational elements create a poetic, surreal atmosphere. Stylistically, the work belongs to the tradition of biomorphic abstraction, with clear influences from Surrealism and Lyrical Abstraction. Its imaginative symbolic forms recall the work of Joan Miró, while the symbolic imagery and free composition also suggest affinities with Paul Klee. At the same time, the ornamental vessel forms and calligraphic motifs give the painting a distinctive decorative character. The use of oil on cardboard was particularly common among post-war artists and suggests a date of execution between c. 1950 and 1975.
