Historical Description

The Pantheon was originally built by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa in 27 BC and was completely rebuilt under Emperor Hadrian around AD 125. With its magnificent concrete dome, it is one of the greatest architectural achievements of ancient Rome. In AD 609, Pope Boniface IV consecrated the building as the Church of Santa Maria ad Martyres, ensuring its preservation through the centuries. Today, the Pantheon is one of the best-preserved monuments of ancient Rome and serves both as a church and as the burial place of notable figures, including the Renaissance artist Raphael.
