Historical Description | The Sukharev Tower was built between 1692 and 1695 during the reign of Peter the Great and was named after Colonel Lavrenty Sukharev, whose regiment had supported the Tsar. The tower served as a city gate, watchtower, and later as the home of Russia's first School of Navigation and Mathematics. During the eighteenth century, it also housed an observatory and became one of Moscow's most recognizable landmarks. In 1934, the Sukharev Tower was demolished as part of Joseph Stalin's extensive reconstruction of Moscow. Today, only the name of the former Sukharev Square recalls one of the most important monuments of old Moscow. |
