Historical Description

Alupka a city in Ukraine on the subtropical southern coast of the Crimean Peninsula in the Black Sea. Alupka is originally an ancient Greek settlement, the name Alupka being derived from the ancient Greek Alepu 'fox'. It is likely that many foxes were sighted on the site of present-day Alupka. After the Greeks, Alupka became Byzantine. After that Alupka became Tatar. After the Russian conquest of Crimea in 1783 Alupka belonged to the estate of Prince Potyomkin, who was the governor general of New Russia and the lover of Tsarina Catherine the Great. In 1798 in Alupka lived 211 people, mainly state peasants.
