Historical Description | The region was settled by the Portuguese in the 18th century and was long disputed between Portugal and Spain. In the 19th century, the Farroupilha Revolution (1835–1845) took place, an uprising against the Brazilian central government. The population was strongly influenced by European immigrants, especially from Germany and Italy. This led to the development of a distinct culture, known for the Gauchos (South American cattle herders). Rio Grande do Sul is historically shaped by border conflicts, uprisings, and European immigration, and it has a unique cultural identity within Brazil. |
