Historical Description | Bad Ems is located on the Lahn River in the Rhein-Lahn district and is known for its thermal springs. The Romans were already aware of the healing properties of the springs and used them as baths. In the Middle Ages, the town developed around a small settlement on the Lahn. By the 14th century, it belonged to the Archbishopric of Trier. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Bad Ems gained importance due to the popularity of its healing waters, attracting wealthy visitors and nobility for spa treatments. Bad Ems became an internationally renowned spa and bathing center. Notable figures such as Emperor Wilhelm I and other European monarchs visited the town regularly. The city experienced a construction boom, with elegant spa houses and promenades being built. In the 20th century, Bad Ems remained a popular spa destination. During World War II, the town was largely spared from destruction. Today, Bad Ems is a modern spa town and tourist destination, famous for its historic buildings, spa promenade, and palace gardens. |
