Historical Description | The Garden of Gethsemane is located at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem and is primarily known through biblical tradition. It is believed to be the place where Jesus Christ prayed before his arrest on the night before his crucifixion. The name "Gethsemane" means "oil press," indicating that olive trees once stood there and oil was produced. The garden has been a sacred site for Christians since ancient times and has been adorned with churches and monasteries over the centuries. Today, the Garden of Gethsemane is an important pilgrimage site, characterized by numerous historic olive trees, some of which are several hundred years old. |
