Historical Description

Christopher Columbus (1451–1506) was an Italian explorer and navigator, best known for "rediscovering" America in 1492. He wanted to find a new sea route to India to trade spices and other valuable goods. With the support of the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, he sailed westward across the Atlantic Ocean. On October 12, 1492, Columbus landed on an island in the Caribbean, which he believed to be the East Indies. This event marked the beginning of European exploration and later colonization of America. Although Columbus never set foot on the American mainland, his voyage had a profound impact on world history.
