Historical Description

Maximilian Joseph of Bavaria was born on November 28, 1811, in Munich. He was the eldest son of King Ludwig I of Bavaria and Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, making him the heir to the Bavarian throne (Crown Prince). He was highly intelligent and well-educated, with interests in philosophy, history, art, and natural sciences. A liberal-minded monarchist, he was considered relatively progressive for his time. He undertook numerous study trips throughout Europe and the Middle East. Although he never became king (as he died before his father), he was highly popular among the people as Crown Prince. Maximilian died on February 10, 1864, at the age of just 52, four years before the death of his father, Ludwig I. His son became King Ludwig II of Bavaria — known as the “Fairy Tale King” and the builder of Neuschwanstein Castle.
