Historical Description

Hangzhou is one of the oldest and most famous cities in China. Its history dates back over 2,000 years. The region was already settled during the Qin Dynasty (221–206 BC). In the 10th century, Hangzhou became the capital of the Kingdom of Wuyue and developed into a center for culture, Buddhism, and trade. The city's golden age came during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127–1279), when Hangzhou became the capital of the Chinese Empire. The famous Italian traveler Marco Polo visited the city in the 13th century and described it as "the most beautiful and magnificent city in the world." A landmark of the city is the picturesque West Lake (Xī Hú), which has inspired artists, poets, and emperors for centuries. Today, Hangzhou is a modern metropolis – rich in history, culture, and economic significance.
