Historical Description

Philip IV, King of Spain (1605–1665), reigned from 1621 until his death and belonged to the Habsburg dynasty. He inherited a vast global empire, which, however, entered a period of decline during his rule. Under his reign, Spain lost important territories, including Portugal (1640) and the Netherlands (1648), and became entangled in the Thirty Years' War. Philip IV was heavily reliant on his powerful minister, the Count-Duke of Olivares, whose reforms and military campaigns placed a heavy financial and political burden on the empire. Despite the crises, his reign was culturally significant: he was a great patron of the arts, particularly of the painter Diego Velázquez. By the end of his rule, Spain was economically weakened and politically fragmented, laying the groundwork for the further decline of Habsburg power in Europe.
