Historical Description | Sri Lanka was already inhabited in the 6th century BCE. The Sinhalese established early kingdoms like Anuradhapura (377 BCE – 1017 CE) and later Polonnaruwa. Buddhism arrived from India in the 3rd century BCE and became the island’s dominant religion. In 1505, the Portuguese became the first Europeans to arrive on the island and began colonizing it. In 1658, the Dutch took control of large parts of the coastline. By 1796, the British arrived and made Ceylon a British crown colony in 1815, after defeating the last Sinhalese kingdom (Kandy). Ceylon gained independence from the United Kingdom on February 4, 1948. It remained a Commonwealth realm with the British monarch as head of state. In 1972, Ceylon became a republic and officially changed its name to Sri Lanka (meaning "resplendent island" in Sinhala). |
