Historical Description

Hobart is the capital of the Australian state of Tasmania and the second oldest city in Australia after Sydney. The city's history began in 1803 on the site of today's Risdon Cove with the founding of a convict colony by Lieutenant Governor David Collins. Charles Darwin visited the town in 1836 as part of an expedition. From 1842, the settlement was able to call itself a town; it received its current shortened name in 1881.
