The city's history began in 1803 on the site of today's Risdon Cove with the founding of a convict colony by Lieutenant Governor David Collins. Charles Darwin visited the town in 1836 as part of an expedition. From 1842, the settlement was able to call itself a town; it received its current shortened name in 1881. |
