Historical Description

At the end of the 18th century, Russell was still a settlement of the local Māori and was called Kororāreka. Kororāreka was renamed “Russell” in honor of the former Colonial Secretary of State and later British Prime Minister Lord John Russell. Before 1840 the main areas of contact between Māori and Europeans were at opposite ends of the country. Sealers and whalers frequented the shores of Foveaux Strait, in the south. They also called in Russell ist ein kleiner Ort im Far North District der Region Northland auf der Nordinsel von Neuseeland to the Bay of Islands in Northland. There, Kororāreka (now Russell) developed as New Zealand’s first, rough and ready, European town.
