Franz Xaver Zettler (1841- 1916) Munich, was a German draughtsman and glass painter. In 1871, he founded the “Institut für kirchliche Glasmalerei” in Munich, which later became the royal court stained glass workshop. Zettler initially worked as a merchant. Due to his great artistic inclinations and interest in art history, he trained in these fields. He became an employee of the Mayer'sche Hofkunstanstalt in Munich, where he soon became part of the management team. After the Royal Stained Glass Institute in Munich was closed down, he set up his own business in 1871 and founded the “Institute for Ecclesiastical Stained Glass”. Through his efforts to reapply the principles of the heyday of medieval glass painting, he received numerous commissions from Germany and abroad. Due to his great artistic and commercial success, King Ludwig II of Bavaria awarded the company the title “Royal Bavarian Court Glass Painting” in 1873 and conferred the Order of St. Michael on him.
