Historical Description | Tivoli (ancient name: Tibur) is a town in the metropolitan city of Rome in the Italian region of Lazio. Tibur was a city of the Latins, which came under Roman control along with the whole of Latium in the 4th century B.C. Emperor Hadrian built an extensive villa complex, the Villa Adriana, in front of the city as a summer residence. The magnificent palace and gardens, including artificial lakes, water features and theaters, have made Tivoli synonymous with amusement parks. Tivoli was also one of the most important places around Rome in the Middle Ages. In the mid-16th century, Pirro Ligorio built the Villa d'Este for Cardinal Ippolito d'Este, famous for the water features in its Renaissance garden. The romantic location of the town with the Aniene waterfalls and the ancient ruins has always attracted artists. |
