Historical Description | Mythical creatures are creatures whose outward appearance is shaped by people's imagination and whose existence has not been proven. They are human beings, animals (mythical creatures), spiritual beings or hybrid beings (chimeras) that play an important role in fairy tales and legends, in mythology and in heraldry, for example the minotaur, the cyclops or the centaur. Today, most mythical creatures are regarded as cultural projections of the people of their time and provide an insight into the socio-cultural developments of mankind. Some have their origins in the real world: it is assumed, for example, that in earlier times seafarers reinterpreted manatees as mermaids or mermaids and accidentally found mammoth bones were assigned to giants. Rarities and mythical creatures had a special place in the princely cabinets of curiosities that were created from the 16th century onwards. Conrad Gessner, for example, drew dragons and unicorns that could actually be found in the Alps. This was intended to depict the richness of God's nature. |
