Historical Description | The Sinaia Monastery, named after Mount Sinai in present-day Egypt, represents the historical origin of the city of Sinaia. Founded in 1695, it is still home to about twenty Romanian Orthodox monks. Northwest of the city is Peleș Castle, built between 1873 and 1883 for King Charles I of Romania. It served as his summer residence until Carol's death in 1914 and was considered his favorite castle. Its half-timbered walls and oriels recall both the imperial and royal style and Hohenzollern Castle, the king's home. |
