Historical Description

Füssen is a town in Bavaria, Germany, in the district of Ostallgäu. The town is known for its violinmaking industry, and as the closest transportation hub for the castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. In 1745, the Treaty of Füssen was signed between the Electorate of Bavaria and Habsburg Austria, ending Bavaria's participation in the War of the Austrian Succession. During the 19th century, composer Richard Wagner used to come to Füssen by railway when he visited King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Füssen gained special importance between the 15th and 18th centuries with the special craft of lute makers and violin makers that settled here. Füssen is considered to be the cradle of commercially operated lute making in Europe. In 1562 the first lute maker guild in Europe was founded here. Today the region around Füssen is a tourist stronghold, known as Königswinkel. The royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are in the immediate vicinity.
