Historical Description

The history of music, or music history, is the account of the historical development of music and musical phenomena. Traditionally, it includes, among other things, the historical development of singing and melody, rhythm, musical instruments, harmony and polyphony, harmony and the development of writing and reproduction. In its first edition, the encyclopedia Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (Music in History and Presence) was organized by epochs; the presentation was also published separately as Epochs of Music History in Individual Presentations, there with the chapters Ars antiqua, Ars nova, Humanism, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, New Music. The common division into epochs simplifies European music history with its convention of short designations: "communication of many people who also have and understand their common history". The epochs of classical music are: Middle Ages (approximately 9th to 14th centuries) Renaissance (15th to 16th centuries), Baroque (approximately 1600 to 1750), Classical (approximately 1750 to 1830), Romantic (19th to early 20th centuries), New Music (20th and 21st centuries). The first form of music was probably singing. Researchers assume that it was not until 150,000 years ago that modern humans were able to speak "properly" and thus sing. The oldest musical instruments, however, are probably around 40,000 years old.
