Historical Description

In 1633, the first Englishmen arrived in the country from Massachusetts. Two years later, the settlements of Windsor and Wethersfield were founded. Thomas Hooker founded Hartford in 1636. The three settlements joined together in 1639 to form the colony of Connecticut. In the same year, the colony of New Haven was founded. In 1662, Connecticut received autonomy approved by King Charles II and its own constitution. In 1665, there was a merger of Connecticut and New Haven. Planning for a merger with the Dominion of New England occurred in 1685. In July 1776, Connecticut declared independence from Great Britain as one of the Thirteen Colonies and became the fifth state of the United States on January 9, 1788.
