Historical Description | Historical travelogues not only take you to distant, incredible worlds, but also to time-related ideas and prejudices. It is exciting to see how people from different cultural backgrounds react to each other at different times. Especially when they describe the encounter in a completely subjective and idiosyncratic way. Travelogues from the 16th to the 20th century are subjective. They draw from a sprawling pool. In order not to bore the readers, the most famous and scientific ones - Humboldt, Seume, Goethe, Livingstone, Conrad - have been passed over. Then, on the one hand, they are unadulterated, honest, and possibly greatly exaggerate because they were aiming at the reader's favor. For many of the travel descriptions were bestsellers in their day. Exaggerations, lies, but also omissions were intended to increase the fame and honor of the travelers without disturbing their contemporaries too much in their view of the world. |
